Rune Blades are Code Vein 2's newest weapon archetype — dual swords that don't sit in your hands but float beside you, controlled through the power of Formae.
Every attack synchronises your character's acrobatic and martial arts movements with the orbiting blades.
The result is a weapon class that plays nothing like Swords or Twin Blades, despite sharing a similar silhouette — and all 5 confirmed Rune Blade locations are tracked on MapMaster's Code Vein 2 interactive maps.
Rune Blades were not available in the original Code Vein — they're entirely new to this entry.
Rather than a physical grip, each Rune Blade is held in place by the wielder's Formae control. The blades orbit the character during standard attacks, extending the reach of kicks and punches with synchronized slashes.
When a Combat Formae sends the blades outward — the Whirling Shredder being the clearest example — the character temporarily shifts to a pure martial arts moveset: kicks, punches, and spinning strikes while the swords work independently at range.
Different Rune Blades have different mid-range Formae behaviors — fire slashes, wide spinning arcs, and descending aerial kicks, among them.
The aerial combo system is unique to this weapon class: a mid-air weak attack can chain into a mid-air strong attack, briefly hovering the character while the blades cross-slash the target simultaneously. No other weapon type in the game offers this.
Rune Blades scale primarily with Willpower, with secondary scaling varying per weapon — VK Rune Blades pair Willpower with Dexterity; Glutton's Eyes carries a high Mind requirement; Stealth Blades focuses on Willpower with strong Magic Formae output.
The class pairs naturally with Blood Codes that invest in Willpower — the Lou lineage meets the minimum requirements for most Rune Blades at Tier C, and Holly's Blood Code provides Willpower scaling, max Ichor bonuses, and Formae casting synergy for a full magic-Rune Blades build.
The Overburden warning matters here more than most weapon types: if your Willpower or Mind falls below a Rune Blade's Burden requirement, the penalty is continuous health drain during combat — not a static reduction but active damage over time while you're fighting.
Keep the relevant stat above the Burden threshold or switch to a Blood Code that meets the requirement before equipping.
The Rune Blade Mastery Booster provides a permanent +4 Willpower alongside increased Rune Blade attack speed once mastered through Lavinia.
Rune Blades also reach their ceiling when paired with long-range and magic Combat Formae — the class is designed specifically around ability-enhancing incantations rather than pure physical combos.
